7 Ways to Avoid Overpaying for a Rental Car
Introduction
Renting a car can often become a stressful part of travel due to unexpected charges that add up quickly. Here are seven tips from travel experts to help you avoid overpaying for a rental car.
1. Do Research Beforehand
Knowledge is power when it comes to car rentals. Educate yourself about your own car insurance and credit card policy coverage before you sign the contract. Research nearby gas stations to avoid signing up for the rental company’s gas offers.
“Do your research and plan before you go so you’re not caught off guard,” said Dan Bagby, creator of the travel planning site Honeymoon Always.

2. Book in Advance
Rates are almost always lower when you book in advance. Planning ahead also gives you time to comparison shop. Use an online price comparison website to find the best rates and take advantage of special offers or discounts.

3. Skip the Airport Rental
Airports often charge additional taxes and fees that rental car companies pass on to renters. Find a neighborhood location nearby and research estimated taxi fares to get there. Many rental companies outside the airport offer free shuttle transportation to their locations.

4. Take Pictures
Make it a point to take pictures of the car when you pick it up and again when you drop it off. This provides evidence to show the condition of the car if the rental company claims you damaged it.
“This is great evidence to show the condition of the car if they claim you damaged it and it was not you,” said Mitch Krayton, owner of Krayton Travel.

5. Skip the GPS
If you're driving in a foreign city, a GPS device is often a must, but rental companies charge hefty fees for it. Instead, use a local SIM card and data plan, which are often more cost-effective.

6. Ask About the Return Time
Much like a hotel check-out time, there’s a set time rental cars need to be returned. Make sure to ask to avoid hidden late fees.

7. Just Say No
The best way to save money on car rentals is to decline any potential extras the agent offers. Opt for alternatives like using your credit card’s rental insurance and planning to fill up the tank before returning the car.
“Instead of paying for additional insurance, get a credit card that provides rental insurance,” said Bagby.
